CFL Disposal

Because small amounts of mercury are  a necessary component in all CFLs, including ENERGY STAR™ qualified light bulbs, the lamps should be handled responsibly and be recycled.  There are many ways to dispose of CFL bulbs:

    • Wyandotte Recycling Center (coming soon)
    • Home Depot stores
    • Hood’s Do It Best
    • Jerry’s Ace Hardware
    • Go to www.earth911.org to find other CFL recycle locations near you

While mercury is a toxin that cannot be disposed of in landfills, it is very common in our environment.  Throughout the lifecycle of a bulb, incandescent bulbs introduce more mercury into the environment than CFLs do.  (See graph below)
